ELSTEAD PARISH COUNCIL VACANCY

There are nine seats on the Elstead Parish Council.  Following the recent request for nominations seven people have stepped forward which means that the seat is uncontested and they automatically become councillors.  This means that there will be no Parish Council vote on 4th May.

As there are two spaces remaining the councillors are looking to co-opt two more people at the meeting on 22nd May.  Anyone interested in being co-opted should contact the clerk in the first instance email: elsteadpc.clerk@gmail.com.

The Borough Seat is being contested and residents will have an opportunity to select their preferred candidate on 4th May.  Both candidates will be attending the April 17th PC meeting and residents will have the chance to ask them questions during a Q&A session.  Please note that following the recent boundary review the boundaries have changed and we will have one Borough Councillor for Elstead and paper harrow.  Previously we had two for Elstead, Thursley and Brook.

Don’t forget if you are intending to vote on 4th May you will need to bring ID with you.

Elstead Village Road Safety Survey

Elstead Village Road safety (EVRS) a sub committee of the Parish Council has been delivering a survey and asking for your views. The group would be grateful for completed surveys as this helps with evidence in getting Surrey CC Highways to look at issues such as speeding etc in the village. The survey is very quick to complete and completed surveys can be dropped to either Chandlers or the back of St James’s Church. Alternatively here is a link to survey if you would rather do it electronically. Thank you in advance for taking the time to complete the survey. Surveys to be completed by 30th April 2023.

Coronation Celebrations 6th-8th May

The Coronation weekend of 6-8th May will be a celebratory weekend.  There are a number of events happening across the village from cricket at the pavilion to live music.  Following the Jubilee events of 2022 some of the monies left over were distributed between three village charities.  The remaining monies were held over for a village fete.

In view of the Coronation is was agreed that two smaller events would be organised for 2023 to mark this auspicious occasion and hopefully a Village Fete Committee can be formed in September to start work on a Village Fete for 2024.

To celebrate the Coronation an afternoon tea has been organised for Sunday 7th May and any residents over 60 are warmly invited to come along.  There will be cakes, scones, bunting and entertainment!

On Monday 8th May children are invited to come along to the Thursley Road rec for an afternoon of fun activities.  More details on both events will be shared in the next issue.

The Parish Council is delighted to support these and is contributing £500 to both events.  Many thanks to the wonderful team of volunteers who are making these events happen.  We hope that you will support them.

Parish Council Elections 2023

May 2023 will be the year for local elections and on 4th May 2023 residents will be able to elect councillors for Elstead Parish Council.  There are nine seats on Elstead Parish Council – some councillors will look for re-election however it is likely that we will need some new councillors to join Elstead Parish Council.

If anyone is interested in standing for election please contact the Parish Clerk or the Parish Chairman for more information and to understand what is involved.  Everyone is very welcome to attend our monthly public meetings so why not come along and see what happens in a typical meeting.  Anyone wishing to stand must complete a nomination paper.  Nomination papers are available from Waverley BC and must be submitted in person by 4pm on 4th April 2023.

Being a parish councillor is a really interesting role and absolutely no prior experience of local government is necessary.  Training is available for any new councillors who join and the main attribute is being enthusiastic about the local community / area.  The Parish Council meets typically once a month with a couple of ad hoc meetings in addition.
Should there be less than nine candidates to stand, the election is uncontested and there will be no need for a vote.  The Parish Counl will then need to co-opt individuals to fill any remaining vacancies within two week of the date of the election.  Don’t forget all residents must bring ID in order to vote on 4th May.
