Horse Riding

Horse Hankley Common

Hankley & Thursley Commons

Elstead is surrounded by countryside with great riding to be had on the local commons, including Hankley Common and the Thursley Common National Nature Reserve.  Hankley Common is part of the Ministry of Defence’s Military land.

The bridleways can be explored on a number of interactive maps, and this one from openstreetmap allows you to zoom in and see the area in more detail.

This figure of eight trail across Hankley Common takes you over a golf course into a Managed Access area of stunning lowland heath with great views, patches of forest and wide open heather moor, criss-crossed with very inviting wide sandy tracks. The going is excellent and the route sticks to public rights of way as this area is used for military exercises. It has a fine picnic spot half way and a pub stop with a big car park on the way home!  Visit the Surrey Hills website find out more.
